Throat Chakra: Vishudda

Our fifth chakra is located at the center of the neck & helps us pass energy between the lower body & the head. This chakra reminds us of our purest self, our originality, our intuition, our most authentic voice.

This month I have chosen to dedicate my practice to being present & remembering that I am right where I am supposed to be. I have taken time to journal & remind myself of what is truly important to me. I think we sometimes forget to take a step back from life & communicate with ourselves (maybe through meditation or journaling) to remind ourselves of our essence or truths. This time of the year can make doing that even more of a challenge. I’ve had to remember that where I am or what I am doing will simply be pieces in my personal life puzzle. This chakra reminds us that there is no right or wrong way to do life & to let go of self doubt & negative thinking. When we get in touch with our purest self, we remind ourselves to stand up for what we want, say no when we need to, & be strong in who we are.

When practicing this Chakra I like to start classes laying down with a bolster or block between the shoulder blades to crack open the heart & throat, allowing energy to flow freely. This also just feels really good during cold seasons when many of us are crunched over & shivering. I also encourage students to Om in and out of class. When we Om we release energy, find our voices, & find a clear separation between the time we are practicing / meditating from the rest of our daily lives.
